Advanced Driving is a rich, multi-faceted skillset that improves all parts of your driving ability.

1. Observation and Anticipation

This involves constantly scanning the road for hazards, other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, and anticipating their actions. 

2. Speed Control

Understanding and maintaining appropriate speed for different road conditions and traffic situations .as well as obeying the speed limits. 

3. Vehicle Control

Mastering the vehicle’s controls (steering, brakes, clutch, etc.) and using them smoothly and effectively. 

4. Following Traffic Rules

Adhering to traffic laws, signals, and signs, and understanding priority rules. 

5. Awareness of Road Conditions

Being mindful of factors like weather, lighting, sunshine/shade and shadow, road surface conditions, and adjusting driving accordingly. 

6. Manoeuvring

Successfully performing manoeuvres like reversing, parking, turning around, and changing lanes. 

7. Communication

Using signals, mirrors, and other vehicles to communicate your intentions and avoid misunderstandings. 

8. Defensive Driving

Driving with a “what if” attitude, anticipating potential hazards and having a plan for how to react based on your experience since you started driving. 

9. Adaptation

Adjusting your driving style and speed to changing road conditions, (particularly rain) and traffic patterns. 

10. Understanding the Highway Code

Having a solid understanding of the rules of the road, including speed limits, lane discipline, signalling and parking restrictions.
